Choosing which ear plugs to buy can be challenging because there are so many varieties available on the market. Here are some tips which should help.
- Foam. These commonplace earplugs are effective at blocking loud noises. They are cheap but are uncomfortable due to their expansion in the ear canal. This causes pressure on the delicate skin lining the ears. Over time they can become blocked up with dirt and wax, making them unhygienic. Not suitable for use in water as they are usually an open-celled foam which allows water to penetrate. Can be connected on a cord and available in many different colours.
- Molded. These excellent earplugs are ideal for use in water and in bed. They are individually formed to the ear canals so are extremely comfortable and effective at blocking water and sound from the ears. Can be connected on a cord, are available in a multitude of colours and ZenPlugs are even antibacterial. This may help prevent ear infections.
- Wax. Malleable white wax, usually mixed with synthetic fibres to increase integrity. Suitable for swimming but tend to only last for a few uses before become clogged with dirt and hair. Unhygienic if used too long. Unable to be connected with a cord, only available in one colour.
