Treatment For Misophonia

Unfortunately there is no treatment for misophonia which works completely on everybody. This may be because there are different underlying causes in different people but nobody knows for sure. Only a small number of journal articles have been published on the issue. The condition is not recognised as a separate disorder in the ICD-10 or the DSM-5. This doesn't encourage research into the condition.

A simple approach to treatment is to avoid triggers to reduce stress. Contrary to this, many believe that continued exposure may desensitize people to the strong response to the stimulus.

Some people have reported that a holistic approach can help. Having a balanced diet, a good exercise regime and an active stress management program reduces the severity of their symptoms.

Treatments which are available include;

1) Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

2) Neuro Feedback

3) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

4) Hypnotherapy

5) Sequent Repatterning Therapy

6) White Noise Machine

7) Ear Plugs

More than one treatment may need to be used to get the condition under control.

ZenPlugs Molded Ear Plugs are a good choice for long-term use because they are comfortable and antibacterial. The plugs are fitted to each ear so create a near-perfect seal without exerting pressure like foam plugs.

Ear plugs can be useful for short-term use in situations which might otherwise be intolerable. Many believe that it is better to continue exposure to the sound in order to decrease sensitivity but the condition can be disabling. There are situations where people need to temporarily be free.

Summary. Misophonia can be resistant to treatment.  There are many different treatments available and it can take some time to find which is the right one for the individual. Ear plugs can be useful in some situations which would otherwise be disabling and unbearable but they are not a long-term solution.
